If you’re in the market for a new lawn mower, string trimmer, and/or leaf blower, do not overlook Green Machine’s lawn equipment. Though it may not be as well-known as some bigger brands, Green Machine manufactures high-quality battery-powered outdoor equipment.

I wanted to learn more about these tools and finally got a chance to test the Green Machine lawn combo this spring. The set includes a 22-inch self-propelled cordless lawn mower with a pair of 4-amp-hour batteries, a 16-inch string trimmer, and a 600 CFM handheld leaf blower. These tools are sold individually at The Home Depot, or they can be purchased as a bundle at the Green Machine online store.

Testing the Green Machine Lawn Equipment

I spent a month testing the Green Machine 3-piece lawn equipment bundle in my own yard in place of my regular equipment. The property includes about a half acre of grass mixed with landscape beds, plus a long driveway and 120 feet of curb. There is plenty of mowing, trimming, and blowing to do on a weekly basis. The lawn features slopes and flat areas with a mix of centipede grass, Bermuda grass, and tall fescue. It borders a vacant lot that offers a densely overgrown, weedy patch. All this is quite useful in evaluating the pure cutting power of lawn mowers and string trimmers.

I tested during the middle of spring in the southeastern US, so the grass was growing well by the time I started testing. I’ve tested dozens of similar products over the past 3 years, so I used that experience and my notes from those tests as reference points when I evaluated performance and assigned a rating for this tool set.

All the Features You Need for Efficient Lawn Maintenance

The Green Machine lawn mower features a 23-inch steel deck that cuts a swath 22 inches wide, with a 6-position single lever that lets the user adjust the height anywhere from 1.25 to 3.75 inches. The mower comes equipped with a rear bagger, a removable side discharge chute, and a built-in mulch plug to dispose of grass clippings in the best way for you and your lawn. Designed as a self-propelling system, the rear wheel drive and 11-inch rear wheels allow it to maneuver easily over all kinds of terrain. The two included 4 Ah (amp-hour) batteries power up to a half-acre of mowing per charge. For storage convenience, the handle folds flat over the deck.

The Green Machine string trimmer has a straight aluminum shaft, variable speed trigger, and dual line bump-feed trimmer head. It cuts a 16-inch swath. The trimmer head comes pre-spooled with .095 twisted trimmer line, and can be respooled with whatever line profile you prefer. The quick-reload spool helps to keep respooling downtime to a minimum.

Green Machine’s handheld leaf blower is lightweight, well-balanced, and capable of blowing air pretty powerfully. It weighs just over 8.5 pounds with the battery installed and pushes a maximum of 600 cubic feet of air per minute at speeds up to 113 miles per hour. The blower features a speed dial plus a turbo button for a quick burst of air to move heavier debris.

Strong Performance in Normal Working Conditions

One of the main reasons I enjoyed working with this equipment is a simple one: it all simply worked as it should. The mower had a multi-stage motor designed to automatically increase power output when it encountered thick or overgrown grass, but it had plenty of torque in normal mode. The only times it kicked into high-output mode were when I took it out of the yard into a patch of tall weeds. Even then, it cut perfectly.

The only complaint that I had was that the self-propelling system was a bit challenging to operate. To engage and disengage the drive wheels, you have to push a button left of the handlebar. Other (more expensive) self-propelled mowers make the drive system more intuitive by incorporating pressure-sensitive thumb pads or sliding handlebars. The problem with this system is that I had to remember to disengage the drive system before slowing for a turn, or else risk overrunning the turn or stopping the motor altogether. For confined areas, I push-mowed without engaging the self-propel feature.

The string trimmer had more torque than I expected, which was a nice surprise. It had plenty of trimming power for edging along hard surfaces, and even enough power and speed to tackle tougher weeds and overgrown grass. (It’s also important to know that the head spins clockwise as you look at it from the operator’s perspective, which means clippings are ejected to the right.) The variable trigger had a really good response time, with no delay time and an excellent range of control from zero to full power. It performed as well as some trimmers that cost twice as much.

The leaf blower was as powerful as advertised, which is perfect for clearing away grass clippings as well as dry leaves and debris. If, however, the clippings were wet or the leaves were matted, it struggled a little bit. I found that slowing down my walking pace and increasing blow force to full speed was adequate for more intensive cleanup in the spring. As with other lightweight blowers, this one does not seem likely to totally replace a rake during fall leaf pickup season.

Quality Equipment

My overall impression of Green Machine’s lawn equipment is that it is well-designed and dependable for general yard work. Each tool did its job well, even if it lacked some of the fancier features found on more expensive models from competitors. I never felt like the mower, trimmer, or blower was outmatched by the conditions. At the end of the day, I was satisfied with the outcome and not overly tired or sore from wrestling with yard tools.

Be aware that the two batteries included with the mower may not be enough to do all of the weekly chores on a half-acre yard on a single charge. In my ¾-acre yard, there was just enough downtime after depleting one battery for a quick break before the second battery was ready to go again. For yards that take longer, buying an extra battery might be a good idea.

Why I Think the Green Machine Lawn Equipment Bundle Is Worth Every Penny

Although Green Machine may not have the household name recognition that other equipment brands cherish, this equipment did a good job in my yard without breaking the bank. Bundle-priced at $769.00 when purchased directly from Green Machine, I think it’s a good deal.

Other brands offer similar 3-piece lawn equipment combos with prices ranging from as low as $425 to about $900, but it’s important to look closely at their specs. Some of those bundles are much less capable than the Green Machine set, whether due to lighter-duty equipment or weaker battery power. If I were a first-time homebuyer in search of the best equipment for the money, I would not hesitate to pick this set.

So, is Green Machine lawn equipment right for you?

Green Machine’s lawn equipment is value priced and does the job just as well as more expensive brands. Although these tools may lack some of the refinement of more expensive equipment, they have all of the basics covered: runtime, cut quality, power, and performance. As with other battery tool brands, the interchangeable battery will likely be the deciding factor for future tool purchases as well.

Since Green Machine also offers chainsaws, hedge trimmers, lawn edgers, and snow blowers, one battery platform can cover all of your property maintenance needs. Green Machine tools are a great option for anyone on a budget.
