Testing the Makita Maktrak Storage System

To evaluate the MakTrak system, I examined every feature and design detail to determine whether each one offered real, on-the-job benefits. I loaded the boxes with tools, stacked them using the built-in rail system, tested their dual-access lids, rolled them across gravel, concrete, and grass—both individually and stacked—and even secured them in a truck bed to see how they held up in transit.

Makita MakTrak Build Quality and Design

Makita put some serious thought into the MakTrak system’s design. Both the rolling chest and the large tool box feature dual-hinged lids, so I could open them from either side. That simple detail made it quick and easy to access the tools I was after. The Gecko Grip side handles offered a non-slip, ergonomic hold for lifting the modules into the truck bed, and unlike many systems that offer just one top handle, these were easier to grab and control.

All three components I tested are made from thick, rugged resin that feels built for abuse. The oversize latches and handles made opening and closing the boxes smooth and intuitive—no more fiddling with small clips or fragile locks. Inside, each box includes removable trays with dividers, which helped me keep smaller tools and accessories sorted by type. And for jobsite security, the modules are padlock-ready, so I could lock things down when needed.

Stacking, Rolling, and Everyday Use

Stacking the MakTrak modules using the built-in rail system was solid and secure, but I did run into one minor hiccup. In my first few tries, it was a bit tricky to slide one component into the tracks of another because it was hard to see what was happening between the boxes during alignment. I eventually got the hang of it with practice, but a small visual guide or alignment aid would make that part a little smoother.

Nearly every other aspect was a win. The oversize wheels on the rolling chest handled concrete, gravel, and lawn without issue; it moved a bit slower across the grass, but not enough to be frustrating. 

One of the most useful features of this system is the ability to open lower boxes without unstacking the entire setup, thanks to dual-sided access. Makita also added two smart details I’ve always wished for: a brace bar to keep the lid from slamming shut while grabbing tools, and a safety cable to prevent the lid from flopping open too far. These are small touches, but they make a big difference in real-world use. The MakTrak system was clearly designed with convenience in mind—something many other storage solutions still overlook.

Is the MakTrak Worth the Price? 

There’s no getting around it—Makita’s MakTrak system is priced at the premium end of the modular storage market. You can buy the base unit, the Rolling Chest, for $249.99 at The Home Depot, while the other two components I tested, the Large Tool Box and the Deep Medium Organizer, sell for $159.99 and $89.99, respectively. Plus, there are several other specialized components in the MakTrak modular collection you’ll probably want to pick up. I know I do. 

But after testing, I can say that the rugged construction, innovative design features, and jobsite-ready durability make the MakTrak system a serious long-term investment. If you rely on your storage system to protect your tools, keep you efficient, and hold up to heavy use day after day, the MakTrak modular lineup is absolutely worth the price.

If you’re a contractor, tradesperson, or serious DIYer looking for a rugged storage setup that can handle daily wear and tear, Makita’s MakTrak modular system is an outstanding choice. It’s built tough, thoughtfully designed, and packed with convenience features that make tool access, transport, and organization much easier. The dual-sided openings, oversize wheels, clever lid supports, and padlock-ready construction make it a top option.

That said, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly system for occasional use around the house or garage, you might find a lighter-duty setup more cost-effective. MakTrak is priced for pros who work in demanding conditions. But if you want durability, flexibility, and serious storage performance, you won’t be disappointed by the MakTrak.
