Howdy -

I'm a poor med student (i.e. can't afford to get a repairman) from Texas, with a broken garage. The problem is that is only opens a little bit at a time. On the first try, it'll open about a quarter. Then you have to close it and reopen it... and it opens a little more. Repeat five or six times and the garage is finally open! Closing is even worse... it stalls at the very top and nothing seems to solve that problem. (We usually just diengage it from the motor and manually lower it.) Any ideas on how to fix this??

Thanks much!

is this the door or the motor that is getting stuck?

the door rollers you can lubricate with w d 40 .

if it's the motor then it may be dead.

and (danger) check if the wires on the door sides are still in tension when the door is all the way down. sometimes one can break loose and cause the door to bind and jam to one side. even though this should not stop it from trying to start to lower.

other things are the mechanism gears have broken teeth and jamming the motor. pop the cover off the bottom if there is a cover.

Check the limit switches to see if they are running properly in both directions. You may have to replace the assembly. I just replaced mine at a cost of $30.00. The door kept stopping at different places and I found the limit switch assembly was bad. Mine was a ***** and the problem started when the weather got cold

Increase your sensitivity , but first run the door by hand if it is hard to open or close by hand your motor will struggle , refer to your instruction booklet for adjustments.

DON'T ATTEMPT to adjust the door yourself (eg. the springs they are under enormous pressure) this should be left to a professional.
