Straight grain fir is a stable wood for this, but there are less expensive ones and you just may be able to save some for tne scrap at the local. OR you could pick up an old solid door at the scrapyard to cut into the sections you'll need.
Next you'll have to put a staight edge on the existing doors & cut those and then glue on your new pieces. Use a construction adhesive if you end up with small gaps, carpenters glue for the most part.
For filler since you are painting go down to the auto store & pick up a can of body filler, that works the best for this type of repair.
