Need advice on how to care and maintain wood chisels.Just bought a nww set of 3 and wonder shud I use an oil stone before I begin using them or only after they begin to dull? Saw something in a book abt this but cant locate the info. Wood refinishers unite!

Sharpen them when they are dull. If they come out of the box sharp, use them until dull.

No chisel comes sharp in the box (except for
carpenter's chisels that are designed for rough use). For woodworking chisels, hone the back and sharpen the tip before use. After each use (at the end of the day) use one drop of magnolia oil. Sharpen only as needed after that using either oil or water stones (your preference). You will never have to hone the back again but you will never have a sharp chisel if you don't hone the back.
