hello all. we just purchased a new home and i wanted to do something special for my 7 year old boy who deserves the world.
he has really gotten into the whole space thing and i wanted to surprise him and decorate his room as if he were an astronaut in space and blow him away.
tell me what you think:
i was thinking about painting his room from the ceiling to about 3/4 of the way down in a grey silver color and the other 1/4 down in a black with maybe a space border or chair rail seperating the the two colors. my wife is against the black (she thinks its too dark) and wants to paint the room blue. i personally dont like the blue and think the silver grey / black would look better.
i have the ability to print poster (and even bigger) sized pictures at work and have some high resolution pictures of outer space that i will blow up and make a focal point in his room. i will then print some 8 x 10's and and put them around the room.
i was going to buy a battery operated star planetarium to produce the constelations on his ceiling but i cant find a decent one that will look good. so i have opted for glow in the dark stars and align them on his ceiling accordingly. along with a black light
i have seen a lamp (looks like a lava lamp) with an alien inside to put on his night stand.
i was also thing about a glow in the dark solar system hanging from the ceiling and maybe a rocket model hanging as well.
any thoughts and or suggestions in helping me make my sons room a hit? i am open and very flexible with plans.
THANKS!
J

I found a site recently that has a lot of links for good bedroom design. Try:

There are some nice loft beds on the site as well.

Wow. I didn't think there was anyone else like this out there. I did the same thing for my son when he was little. I painted the room black on the ceiling and went down to navy blue, then sky blue as I neared the floor. Up in the dark part of the room (from about halfway up the walls to ceiling) I installed LED's in the shapes of the constellations. i wired them to a switch so when the bedroom light is off the LED's can be turned on. After that I painted scenes from space like the galaxies, supernovas, and the planets. Down in the blue areas (or the re-entry into our atmosphere) I put planes, rockets, clouds, and other aircraft (at the appropriate levels of flight. I made him a pillow that looked like a map of the constellations and a comforter with the planets on it. He had model rockets hanging from the ceiling, UFO's, etc. One of the finishing touches was a fake keypad by his door (painted silver with a line though the middle and the word "AIRLOCK" on it)
Your son will love his room! Mine did. Then we had to Move! He was heartbroken. We have been working to make his next room even better. I like some of the ideas you mentioned. I'll have to incorporate some of them. (P.S. he is adjusting quickly thanks to tips I found on my Real Buyer's Agent website-of all places)
To infinity and beyond!
