We often forget to turn off the lights in our garage, and they run all night wasting power. At our old house, I'd solved this by installing a "pilot light" in the cover of another light switch that was clearly visible inside the house. I did this by drilling the cover and installing a small neon indicator light from Radio Shack, which I wired to the light circuit in the garage.

Before I do that again, does anyone know of a product that would provide the same function without the need for me to run wires through the walls? In other words, is there any commercial product that would remotely indicate that a light circuit was powered in the garage?

Leviton makes a switch with a pilot light. The catalog number is 5226.

I'm sorry I wasn't as clear as I should be. I'm aware of light switches that have a built in pilot light for the same circuit that the switch controls.

My problem is that the circuit I am trying to monitor has a switch that is not visible from within the house. So the pilot light I want to install would need to be placed into a different switch than the one that actually operates the lights.

This is what I did before with running wires to a neon light installed in the different switch housing. I'm trying to discover if there is some simpler way to accomplish what I need.

Failing that, if I do end up having to run the wires, does the Levitron switch that you mention have the option of controlling its pilot light from a different circuit than the one that would be hooked to its switch?

That would at least avoid the need to use a jury-rigged pilot lamp in the switch housing.

No I don't think the switch I listed will work for you.
