HELP...we need to replace the flooring beneath the toilet on our second floor...the toilet has been leaking and I have stains through the floor and onto my living room ceiling...before you ask why it went so long...I had an (ex) who would not fix it and I could not and did not have the funds to hire anyone so I lived with it...I now have a wonderful hubby and funds to work with...sort of...and we NEED to fix this rotten floor before winter...thing is...we are afraid that when we lift the subfloor in the bathroom...and we are replacing the ENTIRE floor up there...that we will find rotten joists as well...if these run from one end of the bathroom and down under my son's bedroom floor as we suspect...HOW can we replace these boards weithout having to tear up his bedroom as well...what a mess we are getting into, but we are planning for the worst case scenario when we lift that rotten wood from the bathroom...also...this is our ONLY bathroom so we need to have our plans and supplies set and ready to go to at least get the toilet back in the same day...

If the joists are starting to rot as you suspect, you can attach another board to the rotting boards making sure that it is well past the rotted place. You then need to clean up as much of the bad board as possible without cutting the whole board out. This should help you as an easy fix for your problem.
We were just going to retile the bathroom floor and replace the cabinets. The old tile was put over a mortar setup and very old.
When chipping the old tile out I discovered that the floor was rotten all around the toilet. Infact it was the tile that held itself up. It went through the celing of the room under it.
Further inspections showed that the flooring under the cast iron tub was rotting out and the tub was just about to rust out.
In short, the weekend project turned into a 3 month nightmare. Rotting joists, rotting/mildewed drywall in the walls the whole thing. Working late nights and weekends I got it done.
Best case for you, just replace the floor around the toilet and re-level the ****er out. Worst case call a contractor....
