Start by finding yourself an empty, plastic take-out container—no lid needed. Got it? Now, cut a few slices off a piece of fruit and layer them into the bottom of the container.

Next, tear off a small sheet of plastic wrap, drape it over the top of the container, and stretch a rubber band around the rim, holding the plastic in place. Finally, with a toothpick or the tip of a small kitchen knife, punch a series of small holes in the plastic. The fruit flies can get in, but they can’t get out.

No fresh fruit in the house? No worries. Most anything sweet and fragrant will do. In a pinch, you can even use wine or beer.
