adding a second light to 3 way
i need some help. i want to add a light fixture at the bottom of my stairs.. how do i wire a light at the bottom 3 way switch where the power comes in ... the one light is upstairs after the 3 way switch i can not get access to the 4 conductor cable.. a little access to the 3 conductor cable and very limited access to the wires upstairs
You will have to cut the wall to gain access to install the box for the new light and cut enough wall to be able to reach the switch with the wires you need for the new light. When possible I use a deep box so there is room for the wires. The 3-way switches come with instructions on how to wire them but you should go on line and look at some diagrams
i wont be able to access the wires except at the switches and light. i was able to run a new wire to the area where the new light is going from the 1st 3 way switch with the power
You should be good to go then. There are surface mount boxes that are about 3/4" deep. These are round and if you trace the outline on the wall and cut the wall 1/4" bigger this may work for you. Place the box where you can attach it to a stud, it won't have to be centered on the stud, just as long as you can attach it. The reason you should cut the wall is it will be easier to run the wire to the box.
