Hi! We just moved into a home that's 3 years old. We had a home inspection and nothing major was found. Once we moved in I heard a loud cracking sound (not a squeaking) coming from the living room ceiling when my husband walked in the master bedroom right above. The sound is more pronounced when he's barefoot. The cracking sound doesn't seem to happen as much for me but I'm pretty petite. It cracks with every step when he's walking in the area between the bed and dresser (main walkway in the room).

The sound is very loud and we want to get it resolved. Any ideas what it could be? The builder came to check it out as a courtesy and he's never heard anything like it. He doesn't think its a floorboard issue. He thinks it might be the drywall.

The house has an open floorplan - the family room is open to the kitchen. The master bedroom is directly above the family room and is quite large. So two large rooms are on top of each other.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Could it be a loose floorboard? Bad drywall? Joist problem?

Thanks for any help!
