I'm having some trouble replacing some hard-wired smoke alarms.  In one particular location in the basement, any smoke alarm that I connect to the existing wire does not light up.  I had thought that it was simply a lack of power, but then found out that any alarm I connect no longer lights up at any location!

It seems like that connection breaks something in the alarm.  The back-up battery still works, and the alarm still sounds when using the test button.  But it no longer can get power from the hard wired connection, as far as I can tell.  I have tried several alarms, both old and new.

The connection seems like the standard hard-wired connection, with 3 wires in a triangle shape.  That particular connection does not have a red wire connection to the other alarms, if that might make a difference.  All the other connections in the house are interconnected.

I cannot figure out the right phrase to use to search for this problem. Any ideas what might be going wrong?  Having trouble posting, sorry if this gets posted multiple times. Thanks for your time and help!
