Your advice addresses frost-free freezers in an un-heated garage. What about an old freezer that is not frost-free. Since it does not go through the "no-frost" cycle, which creates water, can the old style be operated during the winter months without damage to the freezer or the food?

** Your advice addresses frost-free freezers in an un-heated garage. **

I'm not sure which post(s) you're referring do. I only recall a discussion of frost free *refrigerators* operation in a garage.

** can the old style [freezer] be operated during the winter months without damage to the freezer or the food? **

It depends on how cold winter is where you are. If it drops below freezing ANY domestic refrigeration appliance would likely run into problems due to the thickening of the oil in the unit's compressor. Commercial units designed to operate in such conditions, usually have additional heater(s) to eliminate such possibilities.

We have had our freezer in an unheated porch for 15 years- so far so good.

We live in Saskatchewan where COLD is part of our world-20 to -40 C - and that's on a nice winter day! lol
