I recently installed an expansion tank on the cold water line at the hot water heater for a hammering noise in the heater. The noise is still there. Should I try to completely drain th tank and if so what is the correct way so I dont get air trapped in the lines. I would also like to install a water softener. Can you recommend a good maintence free softener.

Regarding the water softener choice. I have one and I wish I looked more closely at how it hooks up. The hookup consists of plastic components with plastic clips and O-rings that are supposed to keep water from leaking. Bzzt. Bad design if you ask me. Right now, I'm battling a leak at the point where plastic meets plastic and an O-ring is involved. Be sure to check as much as you can on the design and how much plastic is used. Plastic cracks easily or slight imperfections can cause leaks, etc.
