I recently discovered that my Cold Air return ducts in my house are nothing more then two joists with a piece of metal nailed to close them into a channel. Does it make sence to remove this and add a pipe? Would it make my heating system more efficient? Any pros or cons to doing such an operation?
The house was built in the 50's and I am sure this is original.

Yes, it is in a heated basement so I will leave it as is. One other question about the duct work. I have a gas line that runs perpendicular under the duct work and would like to run it through the joist but of course the return duct is there. If I call a pro to reroute this through the joist is he going to be able to put it through the joist if he has to go through the return. It sounds like this may not be illegal to me. Does anyone know the answer before I call?
