I thought I had a roof leak in my bathroom. My ceilings are high (cathedral), so it has always been difficult for me to get up there to check it out. I just had a local contractor come out, and he said it was not a roof leak (he said he coudl tell just by looking at it). He did not, however, tell my husband what was causing the spot. I have noticed it in another bedroom as well. Can anyone tell me what may cause a browm spot to appear on a ceiling if a leak is not present? Without an answer, I can't help but think there is still a problem that I may need to fix.

99 out of 100 times it is a leak. If it is not a "roof" leak check the plumbing vents.

What size and shape are the spots and are they much darker at the edges than in the center?
Is this on the first floor or a 2-story house? In this case, there could be plumbing above. Or is it only the attic/roof above?
How old is the house? Have you had leaks in the past?
If there's an attic, did the contractor look there? If he gave no idea what the problem might be, then he either doesn't know, or doesn't want the job. I'd try another contractor.
