Hard coat finish - self leveling additive??
I want to paint my cupboards...no $$ for new ones. I want a paint that is going to dry to a hard coat finish...more than a high gloss. One that will self level the brush marks. Do you know what I mean?? Is there a particular paint (brand/finish) I want to get? An additive to self level - get a hard shell? Application techniques? Please advise.
The best way to get a mirror finish is to spray the paint on your cabinets with an HVLP sprayer. These sprayers have very little overspray and orange peel.
What type of finish is on your cabinets now?
If you have acrylic/latex on your cabinets I would stay with that type of product. But HVLP sprayers don't do very good with acrylics as they leave to much of an orange peel finish. An airless leaves a smoother finish but is not practical to do cabinets with because of the overspray.
If you want a really glossy finish you can use Duron DTM Acrylic Gloss and add some Flood Floetrol which will give you more open time and improve leveling and apply with a foam roller cover. The DTM products have more gloss than a regular acrylic product and will work fine or your cabinets even though they were designed originally for metal.
Before you paint your cabinets be sure they are clean of grease and dirt by washing with TSP and warm water.
They make a product not sure the name of it but it gets thick enough that you can coat pennies or such, like what some bars have or Applebee's have the same thing too.
It comes in a 2 part system and you pour it on and let it sit it get's thick and hardens up.
Places such as m enards ,home depot, and almost all paint stores sell it.
It cannot ever be sparayed or brushed it self levels and is really glossy.
Darn I can't remeber the name of it.
Will get the name for you if you'd like or maybe someelse knows what it's called.
