Can you paint (or otherwise refinish/recolour) ceramic tile flooring? I'm sure this question has been discussed many times before. And I have read many mixed and conflicting messages. Some say no, others yes. The no side says that the paint wont stick, and will quickly result in peeling. The yes side says if you use the appropriate tile cleaners, primers, and paints, it will work out just fine.

Even if paint isn't a good idea, are there any chemical, acid stain, molecular bonding, or other methods of manipulating the tile colour which can be used? How about recovering the tiles altogether, with a new material? I have a lot of plain, white, low gloss, cermic flooring throughout my house, and I would REALLY like to do something with it. Any help is appreciated.

Also, what about these sites listed below? Do they really have products that do what they sugggest? www.integritycoatings.com www.beautifulfinishes.com www.grahampaint.com
Thanks, Richard.

Dear Richard,
Personally, I would not recommend painting ceramic tile. The sites you listed are all trying to sell their product. I've seen many painted tile jobs that look good in the beginning, but turn to kaka after a few years. The only paint that I've ever seen stick was on a fireplace I just refinished. This stuff was on there for quite a few years and I played H-E-double L getting it off. However, it still looked lousy.
