We replaced all of our stairs (which were carpeted) with oak. The only thing we have left to do is replace one railing. The old railing was metal and was only bolted to the floor in two places.

The new railing will be about 2 ft long, and I'm not sure how I should install it. Should I put a shoerail over the carpet, should I screw the ballusters to the floor through the carpet? Is there any other way to fasten a railing to a floor without tearing out the carpet?

Thanks for the help.
