I live in Ohio, have a basement, and think I have a moisture or a bug problem with my oak(?) hardwood floors. Last year the floor started to squeak in the winter and show dark signs around the seams of the boards. The subfloor(?) in the basement only shows very light stain looking spots on the wood. This year the floor is squeaking more and the edges of the planks are even darker. I have noticed little burn looking spots on the wood.
My question is how do I check for moisture or bugs without destroying the wood floor or subfloor? I am a complete novice at this home repair stuff.
Thanks, Hijeanne
Sounds like moisture.
In the winter the air may be dryer causing the wood to shrink which is causing the creaking. During the summer the moisture may be creating a mold problem. However it could just be minerals in the water.

definately a moisture issue.
to test you can get a moisture meter, calcium chloride test kits, or hire someone to do it for you.
you should be running a dehimidifier there constantly to limit any damage.
when the time comes for a remodel of the area or new flooring, there are many things you can do to limit moisture in the area.
