I have a question regarding Kentile 9x9 Adobe Terresque (TE60 - 551A058NX). Does anyone know if these tiles were made with asbestos? We have these tiles in our kitchen, and just recently (last night) removed them since we were having solid sheet vinyl installed (today). The installer now mentions that he cannot do the job because all 9x9 tiles have asbestos and we would need to call in an abatement company to have the subfloor cleaned.

We have some tiles still in the original box along with the instlalation instructions and no where does it say anything about asbestos. We have tried to find out more about the tiles, but have had little success.

:(

In December of 1992 Kentile fled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from excessive asbestos litigation and no longer manufacturers resilient flooring.

I can find no information about current kentile technical services or operations, so we can assume they are out of business or have been aquired by others and any existing structure liquidated into non-existence.

If the kentile tile in question is of period 1980 or prior, chances are extremely high it indeed does have asbestos in it.

The professional flooring installer did his job perfectly.

Any good flooring installation professional will err on the side of caution when dealing with older resilient products of the size and period that may contain asbestos.

The Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA) has very firm rules regarding working around and handling friable and non-friable asbestos containing products.

Asbestos has very serious health risks and can cause asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Your best bet would be to get a local testing laboratory to perform a test on it to see it it contains asbestos or if the adhesives used under it contains asbestos.

Most labs will do this test for a nominal fee if you supply them with a piece of the product. For them to visit your site to test the cost can increase exponentially.

There are two ways to do any job. The right way and the wrong way. Do it right everytime.
