We moved into a home where the previous owner had a cat who had a couple accidents, and add that to our two dogs who also have had an accident or two on top of the regular stains of dropping a drink here or there. We have a regular old steam cleaner, but it's just not getting the job done.

Any suggestions on a professional cleaner (eg. Sears, Stanley Steamer, etc.), and any idea if they can actually get stains up or if they'll just disappear for a day or two until it completely dries? (Hopefully, when we get the money saved, we'll be putting down laminate flooring down in a year or so.)

One option would be to find a cleaning company that uses the HOST dry cleaning treatment. It is ground corn husks soaked in a citrus liquid, spread over the carpet, ground into the carpet then vacuumed up. A friend has the business in my area and I used him to clean our pet stained carpets. While it did not remove all the stains it did remove all the oders. I liked it better than the water cleaning systems out there. Just my opinion.

if there is excessive odor from many animal accidents over time that has caused seepage into the subfloor system, you will never truely get rid of it without removal of that carpet, and repair of the subfloor system.

It would be best to remove the carpet in-tact, unless it is ruined, then replace the padding and seal the subfloor after it droes out.

if the subfloor is deteriorated, then the affected areas will need to be replaced as well.

Depends how bad it is and how long it has been recurring (the aninal accidents).

A carpet cleanin g may mask it for a while, but if it has been an ongoing problem, for mon ths or years, then the carpet cleaning will only mask the odor and it will return.

there also may be health concerns in regards to anmal waste you may want to research and consider.

There are two ways to do any job. The right way and the wrong way. Do it right everytime.
