We built our house 2 years ago and had vinyl layed in the bathrooms. We have decided to install tile now. The bag of adhesive says that it is ok to apply directly on top of the vinyl but I have heard this was not a good idea. Does anyone have any idea if this is ok or should we pull up the vinyl first?

You can install over vinyl(blasphemy). If you do though, your trusting the vinyl to stay as long as the tile. Most vinyl installed lately doesn't stay like it used to. The glues are water soluble; so over time moisture breaks down the glue meaning in about 5-10 years your tile will start sounding hollow. It will still be stuck to the vinyl, but the vinyl will no longer be stuck. If it was a perimeter glue vinyl(never install over this no matter what), it will sound hollow from day one. Also tile doesn't adhere to vinyl as well as to concrete. You are on concrete right? If over wood you need to put down a backerboard, or membrane.
