How many inches is suppose to be between the stovetop and the bottom of the microwave hood? The guy at the appliance store says the bottom of the cabinet above the micro should be 66-68" from the floor. I have 93 inch ceilings and I am putting a 25 inch cabinet above the micro. It will be all the way up to the ceiling. The way I figure, it will be 68 inches from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet, then the 16 1/2 inch micro will hang below that.
My electrician says that I should get a shorter cabinet and put the micrwave/hood higher. Who is right???

GinaS314 - hi, the installation manual that comes with the microwave will have that information in it. I have an over-the-range convection/microwave unit (made by GE) in my house at present. I seem to recall that they recommend at least 18 inches between the top of the range and the bottom of the microwave unit, as anything else will hinder using the range top. Also, that 66-68 inch distance is what GE says needs to be the minimum distance from the floor to the bottom of the microwave. You really need to try and meet both of those minimums.
Based on the distances you provided, the top of your range would have to be less than 34 inches from the floor to give you 18 inches of clearance. I think most modern ranges are closer to 38-40 inches tall (from the floor to the range top area).
So, your electrician is on the mark here. He's probably installed these microwaves before and seen that the bottom of the microwave unit is equal to the bottom of the cabinets on both sides of the microwave unit. That's the way mine is in my house.
If nothing else, the people at the appliance store should be able to let you look through the installation manual to find that distance, or be able to look in it and tell you over the phone what it is so you can adjust your cabinet size where the microwave is being mounted. I hope this helps you some - good luck! Jim D/Heathsville, VA
