caper,

The sump pump should discharge to the exterior to the yard or the storm drain at the street. Some towns don't allow the sump to pump into the sanitary sewer. Check with the local building department.

Most basement waterproofers take the EZ way out and install the basement drainage into the cleanout fitting of your main house drain. Some codes allow the discharge into the main sewer. If this is allowed I recommend you have a plumber install the discharge downstream of the wye where your toilet connection is. The pump is sucking the water out of your toilet trap, and this can cause smells. It's much easier to run 11/2" plastic pipe or even relocate the sump. Keep your toilet where it is. Good Luck.

Sounds like you don't have the proper venting in place. The sump pump is sucking the water out of the toilet
