Bvelectrical
Came home the other day to find no power in garage.Garage has seperate fuse box with power supplied from the house's breaker box. There is a 240v for a compressor and about 4 other lines for lights in the garage and all the fuses seem ok. One plug in garage still powers a outdoor halogen light but the 240 and everything else in garage is dead. Checking the breaker box inside, I notice all my 240's are dead. Stove, dryer and the double 30's going to the garage. There are also 2 or 3, 15 amp breakers that can't be reset on both sides of the box. Everything else seems to be ok. Tried switching a known good breaker with a offending one and noticed a small trickle of power to a night light for about a minute then nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try turning your main breaker off, then back on. If this doesn't cure the problem, I suggest calling in an electrician. However, if you have some experiance and a voltmeter, you could measure the voltage on the line (meter ) side of the main breaker. If it is not 230 to 240 volts, your problem is upstream & will require an electrician and/or the power company to make repairs.

If you get 240 on the line side and you don't get 240 on any of your 2 pole breakers, your main breaker has gone bad.

Thanks for the reply Tom. I've tried main and its branches, but I think it's on my end somewhere. Going to do some wire following tommorow.

This definitely sounds like one of hot legs is out. Could be several causes of this problem.

defective main breaker,

defective main connection either the line coming in from meter or connection to the bus bars in the panel.

defective meter socket.

defective connections on the power company side.

Thanks Joe, the problem is definately on company side. Both of my meters stopped rolling, so, free power on the working circuits for a couple of days. Thanks again.
