How We Chose and Tested the Best TV Wall Mounts

We researched over 30 popular TV wall mounts to create a condensed list of the best models. Since many mounts look somewhat similar and offer several of the same features, we selected four slightly different options to test in our own homes. 

After installing these picks and using them for months, we scored each one based on ease of installation, build quality (including adjustability, if applicable), and value. We considered whether they could be installed into more than one anchor (wood studs, drywall, and concrete), how much weight they could support, and whether they fit a wide range of TV sizes and VESA patterns. 

What to Consider When Choosing a TV Wall Mount

There’s a lot to consider when selecting a new TV wall mount. Personal preferences and practical factors like TV size, wall type, mounting location, wall type, and preferred viewing angle all play a role.

Types of TV Wall Mounts

There are three basic styles of TV wall mounts: fixed, tilting, and full motion. The differences among the types of TV mounts are based mostly on their flexibility.

Fixed

Fixed TV mounts are the simplest and least expensive type. These mounts hold the TV nearly flush against the wall, creating a clean, contemporary look. However, this also means users can’t angle or tilt the screen. Instead, it stays parallel to the wall at all times.

If there’s enough wall space to position the center of your screen at eye level while seated, a fixed-mount model can be a solid choice. Just keep in mind the potential glare from nearby windows at different times of day. Also, a fixed-mount unit will restrict access to the back of the TV, so it’s not ideal if cords are plugged and unplugged regularly.

Tilting

Tilting TV mounts let users adjust the angle of the screen up and down, typically between about 5 and 15 degrees. However, tilt mounts don’t allow side-to-side positioning. To accommodate for tilting, expect the wall mount to hold the television out about 2 inches from the wall.

Tilting TV mounts are a good choice for those who always sit in the same spot facing the TV but need to hang it slightly above eye level, such as over a fireplace. These types of wall mounts also provide a bit of flexibility to reduce glare from windows or lights.

Full-Motion

Full-motion TV wall mounts, also called articulating mounts, allow the most flexibility. They let users pull the TV out several inches, swivel it from side to side, or tilt it up and down. They’re also great if users need to mount the TV in a corner or want to be able to adjust it throughout the day to reduce glare.

Keep in mind, though, that a full-motion TV mount won’t sit flush against the wall. Most have a gap of several inches to accommodate movement. Also, be sure the cords and cables are long enough to feed through so moving the TV doesn’t disconnect it. Finally, be aware that full-motion mounts are often among the priciest options.

Size and Weight Capacity

Every TV wall mount lists the range of television sizes that it fits and how much weight it can safely support. TV mounts that are UL listed or ETL certified have passed rigorous testing to prove that they can hold the weight they claim.

Don’t skimp by buying a mount rated for a smaller or lighter television than you’re using it for. At best, an undersized mount might sag under the load, and, at worst, the television could come crashing to the ground (and take part of the wall with it).

If you don’t know the TV’s weight, check the manufacturer’s website under the specifications for the model. As for size, remember that television size is measured diagonally from corner to corner rather than horizontally or vertically across the screen.

Material

A wall mount’s construction and material are key to its durability and strength. While the material affects the cost of the mount, remember that some materials are better suited for supporting larger televisions. Most TV wall mounts are made of either iron or alloy steel.

• Iron is inexpensive, strong, and functional, but pound for pound, it is not as strong as steel. It works well for all but the largest and heaviest TVs.
• Alloy steel is strong, stiff, and relatively lightweight. Steel makes it possible to use a lighter frame for mounting large and heavy TVs.

Wall Type

Masonry walls, including poured concrete, concrete block, brick, and stone, require masonry anchors. For wooden walls or walls with regularly spaced studs, you can simply screw directly into the studs. Hollow walls like drywall and paneling, where wall studs are not available, need specialty anchors or a studless mount.

Mounting Interface

Another factor to keep in mind is the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) mounting interface, which is basically a rectangular or square pattern of mounting holes found on the back of just about every modern television.

These mounting holes must match the corresponding screw holes on the wall mount. Many TV wall mounts accommodate a wide range of VESA sizes, but as a general rule, the most common VESA sizes are the following:

• 200 by 200 millimeters for televisions up to 32 inches
• 400 by 400 millimeters for televisions up to 60 inches
• 600 by 400 millimeters for televisions 70 inches or more

The VESA size of a TV is usually listed in the owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website. 

To calculate it, start by measuring the horizontal distance from the center of one upper hole to the center of the other hole. Next, measure the vertical distance from the center of an upper hole to the center of a lower hole on the same side. These two figures, in millimeters, are the VESA size of the TV. They’re indicated on mounting brackets by the horizontal measurement followed by the vertical measurement.

Level Adjustment

While TV wall mounts are fairly simple, a few extra features might be beneficial. One extra may be a level adjustment, which allows for tweaking the mounted television slightly to ensure it’s completely level.

Another feature is a precision height adjustment, which provides an inch or so of wiggle room to move a mounted TV up or down once installed.

Other wall mounts have clips or channels to keep cords and wires neatly aligned, although you can also cover the cords with a cable concealer or run them through a cavity wall.

Installation
