Hi, I am finishing my basement and I was told that since I have a french drain that code for NJ would be to start framing my walls 6" from the cement walls? This seems like alot of wasted space - is 6" correct? Is it 6" from the cement walls to the front or back of the stud? Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

As I understand, the reason that you need to frame 6" from the wall is to avoid applying undue pressure from the weight of the framed wall on the french drain's channels and to avoid damaging the channel when fastening the base plate with powder-actuated nails.

In order to capture the space above the channel, you could create built-ins that "hang" from the wall studs, much like a bay window hangs from the exterior of a house. You could attach the rear of the alcoves to furring strips fastened to the foundation walls.
