We bought a house with a finished basement. (drywall and carpeting) Any way we also found out that the basement leaks. A local water damage company said I need to spend $1500 to test the air for mold and then decide what parts of the walls I should replace. Is he telling the truth or selling me a line?

Mold is a serious issue and possible health concern. Extensive and expensive testing is waranted when you have symptoms.

Comparison - Do you need to get tested for pneumonia when you get rained on? or only if you show symptoms of disease? Some doctors order tests that are not needed because of possible negligence claims.
So apply the parable

I'm wondering if I have a similar problem. Can anyone tell me what kind of companies do air tests (for mold or just other air quality tests)? What should I look for?

Thanks.

piffin is exactly right. mold is the latest asbestos/radon scare that people are making tons of money on. I had prices to remediate my house of mold of over 20 grand. they wanted to put a tent over the house and run air scrubbers for a week plus come in with full body hazmat suits. if you dont have a mold problem, dont worry about it. if you still want to find out what it is, look on the internet for mold remediation companies, many will do testing also. plus Home Depot has kits you can buy and send off to a lab much like the radon tests.
