Bvbasement probably know careful who you listen to. In my 20+ years the inspectors I`ve met have shown me most city & home inspectors are probably good folks but most have no "hands on" experience only "walk through-book smart" experience(does not please me to say) so if the city insp. comes by and sez to you"The cracks won`t become a problem"..or that he "Spoke with the contractor and they both agree that underpinning will solve the problem"...I wouldn`t take that to the bank, might be a good idea to have someone there who is on YOUR side and knows about footings/cracks in walls etc...ya know what I mean.Does the contractor have insurance? Does it cover footings etc...not all policies cover everything. And I have to add,not to take a contractors side but,these insurance companies are just getting way out of hand with the kinda money they want for full coverage..even if a contractor has Never filed a claim in 15-20 years.Anyway....No One can tell you for sure that those cracks will stay the same or open up(widen)in future.And may be a good idea regardless of what happens with footing to DEMAND the contractor Waterproof all walls from outside! NOT inside method(drain tiles)ONLY"diverts"water that comes in through a wall under the floor! That is its sole if it doesn`t stop water/moisture from entering it also won`t stop Mold or efflorescence from eventually growing inside of the holes of your block walls.And the inside method does not take"hydrostatic pressure" off the outside of a wall caused from heavy-wet dirt or oots from trees.Have them waterproof the outside walls and correctly Backfill with gravel,pea stone.....keep us updated..GL!

MY contractor went out a second time, this time saying it was "a bad batch of block,"

his solution was to redo the block in that corner, Im doubting this will fix the problems that caused the cracked block in the first place. He also said he checked the footer but no evidence of a backhoe or any pea gravel being disturbed, his answer was that he checked the basement floor and had the footer moved or shifted the floor would be cracked, sounds logical but I put a halt on any block being torn down until I can get a structural engineer to check it out. For my peace of mind, a small price to pay considering the cost of fixing a screwed up footer at a later date.
