I have a l963 house with aluminum windows, very leaky. They are lare (34x34) side by side windows, one fixed, the other slides over the fixed window. I like the size and shape, wonder if it would be worth it to make replacement windows, with trated wooden frames, same size and configuration otherwise. Would this be worth it, since I can't double-glaze them?

You could probably contract with a window replacement company to install vinyl replacement windows for the asame money you would spend on parts and materials to build them.
