We bought my childhood home which was built in 1900. Tiger-striped hardwood floors were installed in the 1930's (we think). The floors, as far as we know, have never been treated or protected and on the first floor, are in kind of rough shape-lots of gaps, no finish, some water stains. We have had a couple of different hardwood guys look at them. One says we could possibly do a very fine sanding and finish but the other says they are unfixable. We can't afford to rip out an entire first floor of hardwoods and replace them, the quarter-round, the molding, etc. Is there anything we can do to just seal the hardwoods and finish them to make them last a little longer?? Surely there is a way….

Need help in St. Louis

I agree with jcaption on both suggestions.
The thing about this is if a contractor does this, there is no guarantee that all the watermarks or other imperfections will come out.( there is a possibility they won't) If in the end, you are not happy, then it becomes the contractors problem.
The only way you may get a contractor to sand and finish these floors is by signing a disclaimer concerning the end result.
Hope this helps you out

i had the same issue if you don't mind the "ruff look" just dump tons of varathane one it. i did that five years ago and my floors are still protected under and easy to clean sheet of glass like varathane.

The first step that can be taken to help you restore your much favored hardwood made floor is sanding. This requires the supervision of a professional. Getting hold of one such person is what you need for restoration. Using a floor restorer solution your old hardwood made floor can get back in shape just like the new.
