I've owned my house since July 2003. With the exception of the first 2 years, it has been rented out during most of that time. Yesterday, I decided to replace a kitchen outlet. It's a double outlet, but only one worked. WHen I took out the old one, I noticed that the white wire went to one plug-in and the hot wire went to the other. I thought there should be four wires: two for each plug-in. There were no other wires (except for the copper ground wire) in the box. Why is that? Is that unsafe? Should I have an electrician put in more wires?
