I just put in a new American Standard air and heat system. The outside condenser is in direct sunlight for most of the afternoon. Will this damage the system? I've researched shading the unit but most blogs advise against it. What is the rule of thumb on this? Thanks!

Shading the condenser will improve its efficiency as long as there is good air circulation around the condenser.

I advise that you shade your unit to make sure it is working effectively and doesn’t have to work as hard. I'm basing this on my experiences because I've had an encounter or two with problem-laden units because of being exposed to direct sunlight.
