Hello, one day, out of the blue, our bedroom 4 way light switch stopped working. We have tried changing out all the switches, but no luck. Still no light.

When we finally tested the wires with a volt meter, we discovered there is no power in the wires - all dead to all switches on the line. There is another 4 way light switch in the same box that operates a different light in the room and it works fine.

Where could the problem be? Does this job require extensive electrical work or is there something simple we can still try?

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.
Kathy

Hi, 1 A four way light circuit controls a light(s) from more than two locations. Is this what you have? 2 "There is another 4 way light switch in the same box that operates a different light in the room and it works fine." Are both switches in that box fed from the same breaker?

Yes, both 4 way light switches that occupy the light box are on the same circuit but control different light sources.

The one we are having trouble with has a total of 3 switches that operate the same light. When we tested the wires at each switch box for volts, we discovered there is no power going through the wires. This is odd since it had been working fine and then suddenly stopped working. This switch system operates two outlets. Both outlets work fine, however switch does not control the power.

It sure sounds like the problem is in the light socket. When the light went out I'm sure the first thing you tried was changing the bulb. Did you check the center tab on the socket to make sure it isn't pushed down and not making contact? If that's not it then check for a loose outgoing wire at one of those outlets.

The outlets on the circuit are working fine. They just don't respond to the 3 light switches on the circuit.

We double and triple checked the wiring to each of the switches and matched the wiring pattern to the other 4 way light circuit that shares the box and has been working perfectly. Still no luck...

I guess we will need to hire an electrician. Thanks so much for all your suggestions.

"The outlets on the circuit are working fine. They just don't respond to the 3 light switches on the circuit." Are they supposed to? I thought we were talking about a light fixture that would not light. Now you say the outlets work off the switches. ???? At any rate I would be curious what the electrician did to fix it.
