We have an old house which has the old style 2-gang switches which does not have a grounding screw. The top switch turns on the light in the service porch while the bottom turns on the light outside. The top switch went bad so we replaced the switch but I'm about ready to pull my hair out.

The top switch turned on BOTH lights but the bottom switch didn't work. I was told that I needed a 3-way switch and not a two-way switch, so I purchased a 3-way switch. The inside light works but now the outside light won't go off.

There are three wires coming out of the box; two red and one black. I connected the two red to the two top terminals on each side of the switch and the black to the bottom screw on the right side.

What is going on here?
