I have a pre-war house built in 1938 that uses exterior brick walls with raked mortar joints that are crumbling and loose. I plan to repoint the mortar but after watching you tube videos and articles on the internet, they all are about bricks with flush mortar joints. I am aware that bricks with raked mortar joints are not good due to rainwater ingress and weakens the joints.
How do you rake out a raked mortar joint and repoint? Should I just clean out the raked mortar joints and just put in new mortar and make it flush with the brick ends?
