Removing a covering from wood??? HELP

So we inherited a home that is over a 100 years old,my problem is this my mother in law decided in the late 80's possibly in the early 90's that using a technique called "antiquing" over all the original doorframes, baseboards, stairailings.I have tried removing this stuff with stripper, it is a very hard material overlay with a "rubbery" type material underneath, it seems like it has to be removed with a scrapper. My hands cant handle this, but I want it OFF,Be gone.The wood underneath is amazing . So what would be the best and easiest way to remove this??? HELP
