I have recently moved into a home where animals reigned free all over the carpets that I am about to tear up! There are hardwood floors beneath the carpet and it is my intention on manually refinishing them (hands and knees sanding). Is there any specific prep-work that I should do to the flooring to ensure that my own animals do not continue the trend left behind?

If dogs lived there before and you have dogs moving in, you might want to try using a fluorescent black light and see if there are any organic remnants once you remove the flooring. Urine and feces will glow. If there is a lot, you may have to have it cleaned using a cleaner that removes organic materials (i.e., enzymes, etc.). Otherwise, dogs which have 200 times the smelling ability than we do, may think that any affected area is their bathroom.
