Our 1 1/2 yr. old Whirpool washer has started acting like it's severely unbalanced, when it isn't. It wobbles and shakes and even spins around 180 deg. (sometimes) when in the spin cycle. It's unpredictable and can happen with small and large loads, no matter how carefully you (re)arrange the load.

We haven't moved or changed it in any way. I have tried re-leveling it using a level, quite a few times. It hasn't worked.

Manufacturer's web-based help line says to call the pros. Does anyone out there have any other ideas to try before doing so?

Hi, this happened to a friend of mine before. There's a couple brackets inside the machine near the top that help support and guide the actual drum that holds the clothes/water. If one of those brackets has come loose or broken off, it'd cause the drum to act weirdly. Also, the pulley wheel that the drive belt goes on, at the bottom of the drum, may have come loose if the drum can spin the wrong way.

You should be able to open the top cover to look at the brackets by gently prying up the top at the front of the machine, near the corners. It probably has pressure-fit type mounts - be careful about the wiring cable and controls as you raise the top cover! To check the pulley, it'd probably be best to remove the back cover, which probably entails shutting off/disconnecting the water connections, unplugging the unit, pulling it out and rotating it 180 degrees.

Good luck - I hope this helps you some. Jim D/Heathsville, VA

Hope this isnt too late. first..remove the 2 screws on the lower front corners of the console. If not visable the console end caps might pop off to expose them. Grab console at sides and pull forward and then up hinging console backwards. In the corners are 2 metal clips. Put screw driver in front slot and remove clips. Undo the lid switch quick disconnect block. Now the whole cabinet comes off by tipping it forward. Once this is done look under the clear tub for a skate plate. It looks like a triangle piece that moves around when the tub is pushed. This plate rides on 3 plastic glide blocks. Make sure all blocks are in place and space between skate plate and lower frame are even. If not the plate needs replaciing.
