I Just bought a house built in 1978. I am putting in hardwood floors, and when I pulled up the carpet I found a crack going through three rooms. There is no gap in the crack and one side is not higher than the other. Is this a major problem?

1 thing is a guarentee with cement "it will crack". before laying your wood floor on cement you must do a vapor test.
Duct tape down a 3' x 3' square piece of Visqueen (Plastic wrap) to the floor and lift it up in 36 hours and make sure their is no moisture under it, it must be dry! if there is you will want to cunsult the flooring experts on how to go about putting a floor down with some type of vapor barrior. I would recomend doing the test over the crack though.
