Okay, so I have a bet going with my boyfriend. I need to basically take a dowel rod and carve a spiral into it for a costume I'm making. I was saying I could use a lathe to do it, he swears you can't make spirals on a lathe.

So a-which of us is right and b-is there an easier way to carve the spiral other than by hand?

Not witha standard wood lathe. You might be able to do it witha metal lather that cuts threads. Ususlly this is done witha router mounted in a special spiralling attachment.
You could also carve it by hand.
