My wife and I moved into our new (old) home in March. The water softener has been unplugged and unused in who-knows-how-long. Is there anything we should check before we turn the diverter valves back on and start it up? Or should we get a plumber out to check it over and get it going for us?

You really need someone, a water treatment dealer is a good choice, to service the unit including sanitizing it and to set it correctly for your water quality and volume of use. You find dealers in the yellow pages under the heading Water.
