I have a three knob faucet in my bathroom shower. The hot water drips constantly. I have replaced the washer twice and after a few weeks it starts to leak again. I'm assuming the faucet is the original which is probably close to 30 years old. Is it possible to replace just the knobs, would that fix the problem?

The washer goes against a part of the faucet body called the seat. They get grooves in them from the water and make the washers go out quicker if they shut the flow off at all. Seats are replaceable. There are square or six sided holes in the center of the seat for seat wrenches. The seats are not universal and you will need to take one with you to identify the correct one. You can grind seats in place but it is hard to get your seat grinding tool centered so you can grind flat.

Replacing the knobs will not help prevent drips. A 30 year old brass faucet is still a good faucet.
