I just found out that in my yard is an old well and septic. Right outside my back door is a patio. One foot from that is the old cleanout pipe for the septic and then beyond that is the old septic tank in the yard , or whatever you want to call it. How can I be sure there is no pipes under the patio. ALso I believe that they had fuel oil at one time. It is now natural gas. Whenever I run the dehumidifier in the downstairs bathroom I smell fuel oil. Twice I have smelled fuel oil outside where the patio is. Who do I call to help me determine how this set up was back in the day. I am sure the cleanout pipe had to connect to the house somehow. Can anyone give me a lesson in plumbing?" Who can help me figure it out? A Plumber? A fuel guy? HELP!!!!

If it was me, I would find out who lived there when the house was using fuel oil, then ask them. You may be able to get someone out with an electronic locater to run it into the pipe and then it will send a signal up through the ground that can be read for depth and for direction. If this is metal pipe, they can simply attach a clamp to the pipe and it will send the signal underground. They can then locate whereever the pipe runs. A good location company could help, but you will have to pay for their service.

Good Luck
