I noticed last week that my gfi breaker had been tripped at my kitchen outlet. Well, I reset it and didn't think any more of it. But tonight my wife said she heard a buzzing noise coming from the same outlet and then smoke came out of it and the gfi breaker tripped again. I know absolutely nothing about electricity and know I will have to call an electrician, but any ideas on what is wrong here? It is only this one outlet and nothing is plugged into it.

You have a loose connection on the outlet where you saw the smoke. DO NOT use or reset this outlet until you have it checked and most likely replaced. You should also turn off the breaker to this outlet.
