load on outlet

I want to use an outlet in my bedroom for a 6 amp a/c. I want to measure what circuit it is w/ a multimeter. I know I need to measure thru the circuit not across. How do I measure ac current from an outlet.

Current measurements are taken in series with the circuit. Make sure that your meter is capable of handling the current you are going to measure or you could be in for a rude surprise.

A clamp on type meter is much easier, and usually safer, to use.Ask around, you might be able to borrow one.

Current measurement is done with a special connector. It looks like a plug extender. you plug it into the receptacle and then plug the device into it. There are 2 wires sticking out of it that connect to the meter for the current measurement.
