I am wiring my new house and just had the well pump installed. It is temporarly running without a disconnect. The well guys specified a 2pole 20amp breaker with #12 wire. The only disconnect boxes I can find are 30 and 60 amp. Can I use one of these?

Also, I want to install a transfer box for generator back up. I want to have 5 circuits on it, totalling 85amps. What size breaker do I use in the main panel?

You may be able to use a 2 pole 20 amp light switch as a disconnecting means for the pump. How many horsepower is the pump & what is the full load amps of the pump? If the pump and its controller re both within 50 feet of and in sight of the circuit breaker, the circuit breaker can serve as the disconnecting means.

You can always use a disconnect rated for more than the circuit, provided that the lugs for connecting the wires of your circuit are within the range that is listed for the lugs in the disconnect. Read the labels in the disconnect for this information.

As for you other question, is the 85 amps a real load or is it the sum of the circuit breaker ratings?

The pump is 1/2 horse power. I'll have to check the lugs. It is at the new house. I remember the box saying to use #10 wire to connect it, which is for 30amp, so presume the lugs will be for that on the box.

The 85amps is the breaker values. Not the real load.

When I was at the store getting wire for my range outlet, I met an electrician who said that he usually runs #8 wire in that circuit. I thought a 50amp circuit needed #6. What do you say? (#8 is much cheaper than #6)
