I'm looking for some kind of screw-in device for a standard ceiling light, which would turn off the light a certain time after it has been switched on in the normal way. It sounds so simple, but is there such a thing available?

I've never heard of a device like the one you want. The next best thing might be a spring wound timer that replaces the light switch. These can be purchased with time intervals ranging from about 15 minutes maximum to several hours.
