The area above the kitchen stove has alot of tough grease on it. I have tried an ammonia based cleaner (spic & span) but it just seemed to smear it.
I plan to apply a sealer such as Kilz before I paint but I'd really to try to get the area cleaner first.
Any suggestions for a cleaner that REALLY cuts the grease?
thanks for any suggestions
Thanks Nick
That is what I used today TSP with some bleach and hot, hot water. It did soften it up then I used a small scrub brush and a razor blade. I got most of it off.

The primer to use is Zinsser BIN as it will hold back any residue of the grease way better than KILZ.
I was wondering how to choose primers and sealers.
The kitchen will require a sealer due to the grease, but what about the rest of the house (I'm painting all rooms). I'm washing all the walls with TSP and bleach but the crayon marks and the permanant marker won't come off, will I need to use a sealer with the crayon and maker?
thanks for the advice

You will need to prime the other rooms with an oil based stain killer such as Zinsser Cover Stain to hold back the marker and crayon.
First, thank you so much for your help.
Now I have another question, if I use an oil based primer, will I be able to use latex paint?
thanks
